Jiffy Lube was founded in the western US in 1979 by Jim Hindman as a chain of seven oil change stations. It experienced substantial growth during the 1980s, reaching upwards of 1000 locations before it was acquired by Penzoil. After merging with Quaker State in 1998, Jiffy Lube service centers were rebranded Q-Lube before Shell purchased the company in 2002. Today there are more than 2000 franchised Jiffy Lube locations throughout North America. Of note is Jiffy Lube's new Oil Change Schedule program in which convention is thrown out the window in favor of oil change schedules that are custom-tailored to each driver's habits, external conditions and manufacturer recommendations.
